Droid X Now Available from Verizon Wireless

The Droid X, Motorola’s newest Android-based smartphone, is now available from Verizon Wireless. The sequel to the original Motorola Droid, the Droid X has a 4.3-inch screen and an 8-megapixel camera, among many other notable features.

The Droid X, one of the most anticipated Verizon Wireless smartphones, is a significant change from the original Motorola Droid. Instead of a slide-out QWERTY keyboard like the Droid, the Droid X has a larger 4.3-inch screen and a virtual keyboard. It also has an improved 8-megapixel camera with 720P video capture and dual LED flash, 8GB of onboard storage, a 16GB MicroSD card pre-installed, a HDMI out port, and it runs the Google Android 2.1 operating system.

Despite these features, reports are coming in claiming that the Droid X comes with a locked authentication chip called eFuse. This chip could theoretically brick your Droid X if you would try to load software, like Froyo, that doesn’t come officially from Motorola. Whether or not this eFuse chip will brick your Droid X remains to be seen. Just something to keep in mind if you planned on loading custom roms.

A possible contender to the iPhone, especially in light of the current antenna issues, the Droid X is currently available on the Verizon Wireless website and in Verizon Wireless retail stores for $199 with new two-year contract. The Droid X is also available at Walmart for $149 with a new two-year contract.
