Nice article – it's good to let people know that there's an ever-growing landscape of free and/or open source alternatives to the big industry players. Although I do agree with joe bob – video editing/compositing in particular is one area where currently there's no real substitute for paying the big bucks.

One small correction though – unlike GIMP, Paint.NET is windows only, not cross-platform.

I've been working in prepress for several years, and the most troublesome files we get are hands down Publisher files. Sorry, but it is no substitution for InDesign.
