Nvidia Optimus Demo – Pulling GPU With the Power On

| March 4, 2010 | 1 Comment

Legit Reviews posted a really cool demo of the NVIDIA Optimus technology that many new notebooks will use to intelligently switch between discrete (powerful) and built in graphics solutions (standard); which will in turn save battery life. In this demonstration NVIDIA takes us inside an engineering lab to show how much power a GPU uses when Optimus switches it off — None.

How better to show this than by physically removing a GPU while the system is running, watch below to see the magic.

Needless to say, don’t try this at home. The last time I pulled a component out of a live system there was a pop and a stutter and 5 minutes of sweating before the machine booted back up!
