OpenOffice is loosing ground to the competition, no matter what improvements they make. Ubuntu Linux just dropped it from it's operating systems and replaced it with Google Docs.

OpenOffice will never be able to match MS Office or SSuite Office for speed. OpenOffice still needs Java to run on.

But if you are looking for something free and just as good, you should try SSuite Office for a free office suite.
