Nokia Expected to Enter Netbook Market

The India Times reports that mobile phone manufacturer Nokia is actively monitoring the netbook market and that it may enter the mobile computing space in the future. Speaking with the Times, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, the Global CEO of Nokia said, “…the PC and the mobile will continue to come closer and merge. A lot of opportunity can be seen in this converged area.” While Nokia has made news recently for its N97 and FCC outed N97 mini phones (which the company calls mobile computers) Nokia isn’t a well known computer manufacturer.

A Nokia netbook would be an interesting entrant into the netbook arena and given the trend for new netbooks to offer some form of 3G functionality the company’s experience with phones and Internet Tablets could lead to an interesting converged device.

While no specifics were discussed, we can only hope that a Nokia developed netbook will set itself apart from the current netbook offerings by linking up with Nokia cellphones in a manner similar to the rumored LG netbook with cellphone connectivity.

Whatever it looks like, I’d expect a Nokia Branded netbook to run some form of the soon to come Maemo OS, since Nokia has a love for the Linux based operating systems.
