Novatel MiFi 2352 Unboxed

| June 16, 2009 | 11 Comments

I’ve been very satisfied with my Novatel MiFi modem/router that I’ve been using over the past couple of weeks. Chris Davies from Slashgear got his hands on the MiFi2353 HSPA, which is a little bigger than the ones being sold by Sprint and Verizon. The MiFi 2352 has a MicroSD card slot and internal memory that can be used to run applications. Carriers can bundle applications, or thrid-party applications can be added later.

One of my favorite things about the Sprint version of the MiFi router is that it’s incredibly compact. The one Chris has looks fatter and elss pocketable.

Check out the unboxing video below or head over to Slashgear for more details.

Thanks for the link, Xavier! The 2352 is a little thicker, yes, but it squeezes a bigger battery in there too: 1530mAh versus the Sprint/Verizon battery which I think is more like 1000mAh or thereabouts.

Once third-party apps start growing I would imagine that extra power will be used for the extra processor/ram/etc – Novatel are still quoting 4hrs runtime/20hrs standby – but until then I would imagine it’ll provide some extra use for the basic 3G/WiFi functionality.

The 2352 I’m using is a pre-release model from Novatel, Thomas. However you should be able to buy one SIM-free from mobilx.hu from Monday 22nd, or – if you’re in Spain – from Telefonica Espana right now with a data contract.

I love the 2352. I think that I’m probably their heaviest user so far, on both VZW MiFi and GSM MiFi. IMO, the VZW MiFi is much more solid, but I’m sure that Novatel will release a FW upgrade for the 2352 soon. The battery life on the VZW MiFi is 4 hours, as promised, where I get less than an hour on the 2352. It’s not an issue, because I’m using a Tekkeon MP1800 battery, but between the unit switching from GPRS to HSUPA, and it running continuously — I don’t think it’s possible to get 4 hours of battery life out of it. It could be just my unit though, or my battery.

So far, thanks to Vodafone’s unlimited plan, I’ve clocked more than 15GB’s in 3-4 days, so I guess you could say I’m a heavy user :-)
