Who Has a Desktop?

| April 17, 2009 | 6 Comments

Our friends over at jkOnTheRun are running poll to see who still has a desktop at home. Notebooks continue to gain in popularity, while desktops fall out of favor.

I personally don’t know a whole lot of mainstream computer users that have bought a desktop lately. You generally get more performance and storage capacity for your dollar if you opt for a desktop, but of course you have to give up portability.

Some professionals and gamers want the absolute best performance available, regardless of cost. A lot of geeks opt for desktops so they can continually upgrade and tweak their computers.

I think the vast majority of home users are best suited with a notebook instead of a desktop. They’ve voted with their wallets and the majority of systems are now notebooks. But many users still have a desktop as a family or backup computer.

I purchased my last desktop about 10 years ago. Head over to jkOnTheRun to participate in the poll. We now have a desktop-free household with several notebooks, mobile phones and a home server.

I have a Dell Dimension, bought it refurb from Dell at least 4 years ago.

Its no power house, but does everything I need.

I’ve added RAM I think twice, it has 1.640 GB,

I added an old second HD, something like 20 GB for backup.

I added a firewire card for my video camera.

And I think the last thing I got for it was a 19 inch widescreen LCD.

My brother gave me a illuminated picture mouse, which as mice goes, it works better than the old Dell mouse I had.

Every once in a while something seems like it is getting flakey, but I run all the clean up stuff and defrag, and it works fine again.

I have not reimaged it in probably two years, so it has a lot of extra junk on it.

I have a nice laptop at work, and I’ve started bringing that home more often to watch Hulu in the living room with my wife. But, mostly, I still use the old Dell.

  3. I have a desktop for the simple fact that I wanted to build one – it’s a very fun thing to do.

Notebooks are defiantly becoming more popular though now.

I was just reading this site wondering if I’m even going to buy a notebook again. I have two desktops that never get used, and a notebook and a netbook. After I discovered that Photoshop runs fine, if a bit slow, on my netbook, I hardly use the notebook at all. The next computer will probably be a 10+” netbook.
