HP Vivienne Tam Mini 1000 Webcam Fixed

webcam_fix_mini_1000_vtLast week, while I attended HP/Vivienne Tam's fashion week events, I learned how to fix the previously reported HP Mini 1000 webcam issue. It turns out the real problem is a bit of film stuck to the inside of the screen, which blocks the webcam. It made my webcam look like it had a dark pair of sunglasses on.

ThinkPads Get Tough, Meet Mil-Spec Standards

Lenovo's designated eight ThinkPads for use in semi-rugged computing environments such as construction sites and police vehicles. Eight ThinkPads meet military specification (MIL-SPEC) standards, which mean they can stand up to vibrations, extreme temperatures, dust and other hazards. Lenovo's now offering an optional 680-nit display for the ThinkPad T400 to improve viewability in outdoor applications.

MXM Brings Flexibility to Notebook Graphics

rene_haas_nvidiaBack in 2004 our notebook partners faced a tough problem – every notebook needed to be custom engineered for each GPU. That might not make a difference to consumers, who just buy complete notebooks with a GPU inside, but the problem with custom engineering is that it takes a lot more time and effort to bring a notebook to the market with the latest GPU.

How Valuable Are Smartphone Battery Life Figures?

09_nokia_storm_patI do a lot of hands-on research on smartphones. I do this for two reasons. First, I believe they are fast becoming one of the prevalent cloud clients, and second, they are fast becoming a popular device to consume video. AMD obviously is involved in building the cloud with the AMD Opteron Processors but also conversion to make a video smartphone-friendly can take a tremendous amount of compute power, and ATI Radeon HD 4800 series graphics and AMD Phenom II X4 processors do those conversions quite well.

In New York for HP/Vivienne Tam Fashion Week Events

vivienne_tam_nyc_hp-15I had the opportunity to hang out with Vivienne Tam and a group of female bloggers in New York during fashion week. On Wednesday night we went to Vivienne Tam's fall season preview at her boutique in SoHo. The Peony flower was her inspiration for her entire spring line, which extended all the way from her dresses to the Mini 1000 special edition that I'm blogging from this week.

Asus Eee PC 1000HE Sets a New Bar in Features and Price on Netbooks

eee_1000he_frnt_angle_02_09It's hard to believe that just over one year ago, netbooks were a brand new class of laptops meant for the developing world. Its creators grossly undermined the public's appetite for cheap and portable computers and one year later, netbooks became the fastest growing segment in the market while every other market suffered painful losses in the brutal economy.

HP Mini 1000 Webcam vs. Mini 2140 Webcam

mini_2140_testI'm a big fan of the HP Mini 1000 and it earned our first Editor's Choice award, but the quality of its built-in webcam is a weak point. The Mini 2140 has a similarly spec'd webcam, but it delivers a dramatically better image than the one found in the Mini 1000.
