I agree that the event will lose its luster if there is no live keynote, but I think Apple could still deliver announcements around that time without attending. Over the last couple years they have made it a point to record and quickly distribute their keynotes. The presentations out of Apple HQ are just as good looking as the Macworld ones so why not invite some select press to Cupertino and live broadcast the announcement at the event. It will cost 1/10th as much and yield a good return in PR. If they could do this and reduce Macworld down to 3 days (or even 2.5) to cut costs it might just prolong things for a while.

Unfortunately, I feel without Apple's attendance, Macworld will see year over year declines in attendance, and eventually fold up. Every point you made is correct, except without the potential for Apple to debut a new product (or in many cases, multiple products) the rumor mill will not drum up all the free frenzy/publicity which traditionally surrounds the event. Without this constant reinforcement, the event will simply slip people's minds. The truly hard core Mac Geeks will no longer attend because their sole reason for going was to be the first to see whatever new piece of Apple hardware Apple would release, even if it is only a week, day, or few hours ahead of their friends.

At least, that's why I went.

:)
