Wishing for a MacBook Pro Dock…

| December 11, 2008 | 16 Comments

I’m enjoying my new unibody MacBook Pro, but not having a docking solution is a real pain. Things are really crowded since all of the ports are on the left side of the new MacBook Pro and while this notebook is uber stylish on its own, things can get ugly once you plug in your peripherals.

I was just using my MacBook  Pro to edit some video and wanted to bring it to my living room to finish up. I decided not to move it because I didn’t want to deal with unplugging everyting and then plugging it all back in again.

I currently have a Seagate Free Agent Go connected via the FireWire 800 port. My iPhone 3G, Jawbone 2 headset and an SD card reader are plugged in via a mini USB hub.  My display is connected to my MacBook Pro’s via a mini displayport/DVI adapter. My speakers are plugged into the headphone jack.

Life would be just a litle easier if Apple would make a sensible docking solution for its power users.

I agree, totally! I’m a PC user that has been thinking about a MacBook Pro for quite a while, and the new 17 inch (thankfully with a non-glossy screen option) looks pretty appealing. I just can’t imagine moving from home to work without a dock on my desk.

There’s a lot of stuff there that could be velcro’d and hidden behind the MBP screen. USB hubs like the Belkins sold in the Apple stores are weighted and have some little cord organizers. Get a dock for the iphone.

I know it’s not a dock solution, but it makes things more bearable. The less stuff you have laying at all angles on the desk, the better it looks and feels.

The Balmuda design does not allow you to use extended desktop with the extra monitor.

The BookEndz product is clunky and expensive.

The best solution is to get an Apple LED Cinema display which provides for power, USB and video. It looks like the only solution that lets you plop a machine on the desk, connect two cords and go, while leveraging extended desktop and use of both screens attached.

BookEndz is now taking pre-orders for their docks that support the newer laptop models. They will be about $300, but it’s a good solution.

If you have external display, you could neaten up the cables with this BookArc – cables would at least be in the back, access to DVD drive in front.

But, definitely need a real dock.
