I am going to college as well and was very concerned about the battery life. The labtop comes with three battery plans: high performance, balanced, and power saver. On High performance the battery dies out really quick but that is to be expected. I put mine on the power saving plan. It says that the performance of the computer will decrease however I have yet to notice a problem. The only thing I change with the power saver default setting was the brightness of the screen. Even with this change the battery life has muched in proved. Perfect for on the go classes :) I just bought the Sony Vaio in dove.
